A little off topic but I have been lucky in my career to work with great people in great environments. I am experiencing the same in my current role. Committed people make great work environments. We aren't family but we spend a lot time together, so let's make it the best experience it can be.
Engagement
I got a little jesting from a few product managers I worked with, about this blog post on working at Oracle. I was stressing the collaborative working environment that enabled the development team to feel engaged and able to bring forward ideas. I always saw it as very positive, as the product features we were working on were aimed at developer experience. It was natural that the developers building it would have some great and innovative ideas on how to make a developer more productive and the types of integration points and tools that would be helpful when using this cloud based product. They were the target audience after all. By collaborating closely with our product management colleagues, I think we reached even higher.
Encouragement
Working together, in a positive spirit, encouraged to think deeply about the product and the freedom to make suggestions or spend a little time prototyping make for great work environments. Creating a team culture and working environment which can encourage engagement and ownership, I believe contributes to delivering great results. You can work and have fun doing it. Some of the best ideas in the teams I have worked in have come this way. If the team are engaged like this then you are more likely to be successful.
Trust
Trust is so important between the team and leadership. The local senior leadership created an environment of trust and respect, believing in work life balance and helping people show their best work. I felt supported and trusted. Reflecting on difficult challenges with customers or a delivery slipping due to unforeseen circumstances, they had my back and trusted the team to pull through. We were successful together.
I have mention that although all my work environments were mostly made in Belfast, I have found that even when working across geographies, similar cultures can evolved when there is great leadership. Leadership in other countries found great culture and people and supported it.
